Spitzer Plays Politics
By Jacob H. Zamansky
NEW YORK POST
May 10, 2005

The May 3 letter from Darren Dopp, Eliot Spitzer's spokesman, attacking Bob Barr's op-ed is dishonest and smacks of the politics he condemns ("Spitzer's Quest for Justice").

Dopp acknowledges that a "defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty." Spitzer clearly doesn't believe in this concept, as he accused former AIG Chairman and CEO Hank Greenberg of committing fraud on national television last month, despite the fact that an investigation is still underway.

Greenberg can't defend himself because he hasn't been charged with anything. Dopp also insists that Post readers know that Spitzer's efforts have "returned billions of dollars to small investors."

That's not true. While Spitzer's global settlement two years ago provided some $400 million in restitution for investors, that money has not been dispersed.

I know of no other settlement that would account for the remaining "billions" of dollars Dopp claims Spitzer has recovered.

The fact is that Spitzer's crusades have caused small investors to lose billions of dollars. Finally, Dopp attacks Barr as being a former "Republican" congressman who now "is a radio talk show personality and political activist."

If Spitzer believes that Barr's criticisms are politically motivated, he should not be using Dopp, a taxpayer-funded civil servant, to defend criticisms of his gubernatorial ambitions.
